NURS 472: Community Health

 

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student the opportunity to complete an analysis of a public health issue from a social justice perspective. 

 

Student Approach to Assignment: I approached writing this paper by showing a feeling of urgency and empathy for the Palestinian people. I chose to highlight a current political issue which was the lack of resources and healthcare due to the war occuring in Palestine. I used this paper to raise awareness on the circumstances that the Palestinians have to face and advocate for equal access to healthcare globally.

 

Reason for Including this Assignment in the Portfolio: I chose to include this assignment in my portfolio because it displays my commitment to social justice and advocacy within the field of healthcare. I am using this paper to exhibit my awareness of global health disparities and my desire to be vocal about the need for action while also showing compassion.

(2) Demonstrate social responsibility as a global citizen who fosters the attainment of health equity for all

• I demonstrated this in paper by choosing a topic relating to the need for healthcare access as well as other resources in Palestine. I also mentioned ways that we can combat this issue such as donating money on a monthly basis through the WHO Foundation. I heavily emphasized that the things that are going on in Palestine are not something that we can sit back and watch but we must act.

(3) Articulates an understanding of how human behavior is affected by culture, race, religion, gender, lifestyle, and age

• I was able to articulate this in my paper by mentioning how the war and the bombings have affected the Palestinian people. The consistent bombings of innocent towns and people has affected the lives of many regardless of age, race, gender, or religion. Anyone who is located in the Palestine area is at risk for injury or death due to the intense violence that is occurring but they also do not have the resources to help those in need. 

(5) Maintains an awareness of global environment factors that may influence the delivery of health care services

• The bombings in Palestine have significantly affected the ability to deliver health care services. Because of the bombings, not many resources have been able to be replenished throughout Palestine. This has led to the demand for care being much higher than what is able to be supplied. As mentioned in the paper, there have even been bombings occurring at hospitals and clinicals which has further limited the health care access to the Palestinian people.
