Oral Presentation: Pediatric Nursing Rounds

Nurs 421: Clinical Management of Children of the Family

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to integrate knowledge from the sciences, developmental theory, and physical assessment data to the care of a pediatric patient and family in the acute care setting. The student will utilize critical thinking and independent judgment in presenting a holistic plan of care in formal oral presentation.

Student Approach to Assignment: My approach to creating this presentation was to provide the viewers with a brief overview of the patient case that I had while at pediatric clinical at CHKD. This presentation gives the viewers the situation, the background, the treatment plan, and a reassessment to assess how effective the interventions were.

Reason for Including this Assignment in the Portfolio: I chose to include this assignment in my portfolio because it shows the knowledge that I have obtained from being in pediatric clinicals. This presentation shows how I used the information I learned in a pediatric lecture and applied it to care I gave in the pediatric clinical setting. It properly displays my ability to connect the dots between the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and expected outcomes.

(26) Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences to complement nursing practice

In this presentation, I used scientific research to support my care plan and nursing diagnosis for the patient’s case. I put together a concept map that covers the problem which was obstructive sleep apnea, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic testing, and possible treatment options. In this section, I heavily relied on my research to provide treatment options. I also included research with each potential nursing diagnosis, interventions, and expected outcomes to show that the interventions are effective according to the research.

Domain 6: Interprofessional Partnership

(32) Adhere to the registered nurse scope of practice and standards of practice

One way I felt that I adhered to the registered nurse scope of practice is doing an assessment prior to the tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy surgery as well as reassessing after the procedure. Another reason why I feel I adhered to the scope of practice is because I also included that the patient had polysomnography done prior to the surgery

Domain 7: Systems-Based Practice

(36) Understands the effect of legal and regulatory process on nursing practice and health care delivery

For the case study I presented, I understood the legal and regulatory process by looking back through the chart alongside the nurse to ensure that all documentation including the consent form has been signed. In addition to this, there were many things that I could only observe and not do hands on because I do have a nursing license and it is not within my scope of practice.

(40) Use evidence-based patient teaching materials, considering health literacy, vision, hearing, and cultural sensitivity

I used evidence-based teaching materials throughout my pediatric grand rounds presentation to incorporate all learning styles such as videos, pictures, and bubbles to summarize the information that was covered throughout the slides.
