NURS 332: The Growing Family
Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this paper is to examine a controversial or politically or publicly debated women’s health, obstetric, or neonatal issue and present both sides equally.
Student Approach to Assignment: My approach to writing this paper was to educate the readers as well as myself on the disparities that maternal black have to face. While writing this paper, I considered my target audience to be members of the black community, activists, those planning to begin parenthood, and healthcare professionals because they are the individuals most affected by the issue or the only ones who can bring about the needed change.
Reason for Including this Assignment in the Portfolio: This paper is being included in my portfolio to show my ability to conduct thorough research on complex healthcare matters. It shows that I am able to provide the public with educational material on a topic that may matter to me without being biased. It also shows my awareness of the maternal black women’s struggles though I have not experienced it first hand. I analyze data given to me by research and use it to advocate for better healthcare for a specific population.
Domain 7: Systems-Based Practice
(4) Recognize the impact of health disparities and social determinants of health on care outcomes
-
Because of my research, I was able to provide a detailed exploration of the disparities that maternal black women have to face when seeking care in a clinical setting. I educated the reader on the heightened mortality rates the black maternal women have to face due to their signs, symptoms, and voice being ignored.
Domain 5,8: Quality & Safety and Informatics & Healthcare Technologies
(30)Accesses and utilizes data and information from a wide range of sources to evaluate patient safety and care outcomes
-
One of the major components to this paper was the amount of research that was involved. I chose a topic that I did not know much about initially which was “the high mortality rates in black women,” so it required much research. Through my research, I was able to show the reader the safety concerns of black maternal women in intrapartum and postpartum. I talked about how having more black obgyn’s in the field, better physician education, and going to an establishment where you have built rapport with the provider and feel safe may lower the negative outcomes which has been death of the mother.
Domain 9: Professionalism
(42) Advocates for professional standards of practice using organizational and political processes
-
Overall, the purpose of writing this paper was to educate while also advocating for maternal black women’s safety and their healthcare outcomes. Though there was a small silver lining with so many women’s lives lost beginning to make the public realize that here is a problem within the healthcare system, there is still a great deal of work to be done. In my paper I suggested that there is a need for reevaluation of birthing procedures to determine why the maternal mortality rates within this specific race are so high.
